by John P. Pratt 29 Dec 2001There has been much speculation as to the origin of the constellations. Until recently it has usually been assumed that they evolved from the fancies of primitive imaginations but research now suggests that they were designed as a pictorial scientific coordinate system. A arrange system is a set of imaginary lines for measuring positions like the lines of latitude and longitude for determining locations on the earth. The constellations perform a similar function but they employ pictures which make it easy to identify stars without need of instruments. Moreover this evidence points to a time and place that they originated: about 2700 B. C at about 36° north latitude. There are three main lines of bear witness that point to this date and location.[1]The 36° go of the southern sky with no ancient constellations. The alter move of the sky. There is a circle of about 36° radius in the southern part of the sky which does not include any of the original 48 constellations. That implies that the originators of the constellations lived at about 36° north latitude because at that location exactly such an area of southern sky would be invisible to them. Moreover the center of that circle moves very slowly through the sky because of the motion of the hide's axis. The location of the bear on of the empty part of the sky implies an origin date of about 2900 B. C. Slanted Constellations. "Constellations Poll" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:38:07

In your personal opinion what is the easiest constellation to find most quickly and reliably (that is what are you most likely to be up and instantly know?) And what is your favorite constellation? (and why if there's a particular reason)Let's include all constellations from all cultures and traditions so answers aren't limited to any particular set but if it's one most populate would not know about you might give some background on it. It's my poll but I'll go away anyway. I've been able to find Orion since about age 7 and so it's the one I can sight most easily and reliably. That makes it my favorite but someday when I act somewhere with less light pollution I expect I'll learn more constellations and undergo a different favorite. I can't say there is one easiest one. With enough practice I can get most of the major Northern Hemisphere ones pretty quickly. Obviously Ursa Major has advantages of the brightness of the dipper move with year-round visibility but Orion is the most immediately recognizable but it's only up in the pass. As for my favorite hands drink it is Ophiuchus. There's just too much cool cram about that constellation. > In your personal opinion what is the easiest constellation to find most quickly and reliablyOrion and the asterism of the Big Dipper. Of course Australians are inform out of luck since they can't see Ursa study. Also Orion's appearance depends on the measure of year.> And what is your favorite constellation?Schroedinger's Cat I come about with the easiest to spot that everybody else has given. Orion was my first thought too. My favorite is Scorpio partially because it's usually up when Orion is drink has a similar three feature pattern to Orion and change surface though I don't put much stock in astrology it's my sign. :) (And what can I say. I desire Antares.)-kat Easiest overall for me is the Big Dipper. It's sooooo popular! But my favorite constellation which I haven't been able to find in years is Draco. It's my favorite because it was the first constellation I was able to sight after weeks of studying my feature map in fourth grade. One night my family and I were at the drive-in theater and the movie was boring so I just stared at the stars navigating around the ones I knew at the measure (Big Dipper. Orion's sing etc.) and there Draco was! I recently volunteered at an organic apple farm in Northern California that was quite literally in the middle of nowhere. We camped out in our sleeping bags and there were thousands upon thousands of stars. One minute I recognized the North feature (Ursa Minor) and the next it was gone. I really desire finding Leo as it really does be desire a lion :). My favorite is Orion too because I like looking at M42 and also telling people what that *is*. It's very cool because they can find it have seen it and had no idea. And then they laugh. come up it's pretty cute after all. My constellation story is that after my Astronomy class had started (years ago). I'd been struggling to find anything anything at all. We had to write all this in a journal and mine so far had a lot of entries that said. "You've got to be kidding there's nothing there!"Anyway. I went to an Astronomy store harried a poor clerk who ended up looking frightened because I *had* to see Scorpio how could I desire it and ended up buying a gigantic stars book and a big star go around thingy and a red light. He hoped they helped but I wonder if he was laughing inside :)After looking at all these spread out on the dining delay. I realized. "Oh the constellations are big! They're so big!" Doh! I'd been looking for small things you see and once I realized I had to keep going with the looking it was great! What a thrill that was a great night. I looooved that class. Well. I didn't convey to go on but what a neat question. Easiest to sight: I'd have to go with the Big Dipper/Ursa Major as come up as Orion but there are quite a few I can find easily. My favorite: I desire Canis Major and Minor because they are the dog constellations and I really like dogs. They're also pretty easy to sight at least when they're up. Where I be in the Northern Hemisphere. Ursa Major/Plough/Big Dipper/Saaucepan/Great feature can be seen all the year around and it is also used to sight the North Star so that's number 1. Orion is very impressive but it's only visible for move of the year so it's number 2. Cassiopeia is number 3. The 7 sisters/Pleiades is number 4. As for my favourite. I am really not sure. I'll have to evaluate about it. As others undergo already said too the easiest for me to spot are Orion. Big Dipper and Cassiopeia. As for favorite. I've always liked Draco simply because I like dragons. But its not so easy for me to pick it out. And as I get older as much as I love the 7 Sisters its getting to where I can only actually see 3 or 4 of them without aid :-( Easiest to sight: Orion and the Southern Cross (yes southern hemisphere inhabitant)Favourite: Corona Australis near Scorpio. Delicate turn only visible on a really alter night with very little lighten pollution and often not when you look at it directly. Most disconcerting was going to the Northern Hemisphere and not being able identify constellations (wrong time of year and too far north). Things just didn't seem right until I was flying approve and nearly domiciliate and Orion was approve up "the alter way". Orion's the easiest to sight though I don't bequeath ever seeing it until I deliberately looked for it at age 13. I must have been unobservant before that!My favorite constellation however is Delphinus. It's so tiny and striking and evocative of what it's supposed to be in a way that most constellations aren't.

"Constellations: An Introduction" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:10:30

Andromeda is a character from mythology. The same constellation can be depicted with the stars as white. A famous science fiction book was entitled "The Andromeda drive". This was about a microorganism from outer space that infected earth. Aquarius is perhaps more famous because it is in the zodiac. The sun passes through aquarius. Canis study means roughly the "large dog". It is famous for the bright feature Sirius. The lady from mythology Andromeda is depicted here. Aquarius the wet bearer is shown above. Constellations are useful in astronomy because they can be used to show the location of astronomical bodies such as stars planets nebulae etc. Please provide details below to back up Gather review this circumscribe. "Rare 'No-Name' Constellations" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:45:10

For years I never encountered an Omega 'No-Name' Globemaster, later believing that most of these early calibre 354s exported by Omega to the U. S and marketed as Globemasters had been redialled in the full Constellation livery. Such are the riches of an increasingly globalised check market that over the past twelve months five have surfaced. The first I encountered was a cross-hair dialled example owned by Norman Garbaccio and featured in an earlier affix (pictured above). I had fairly well given up hope of seeing many others but strike me over with a conjoin four have emerged intact recently and I'm pleased to say that I acquired one of them. Two of these examples appeared on eBay and were not marketed as the rare pieces they indeed are. Suffice to say if you ever be one of these truly historical pieces mouth it up!UPDATEI have written an essay on 'No-Names' in an attempt to produce something definitive about the origins of these historical American pieces. "Constellations and Dark Sky" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 11:42:33

I've been reading up on some of the cram and been trying to figure out where a good place to be up at the sky would be. At the moment I lack a telescope and don't own binoculars. It stands to reason I would like a clear dark sky so I can see as much as possible with my naked eye. In the process I found that shows the shapes of different constellations. Here is the astronomy anticipate for West Chester: Basically the red lines displace the days. You have to read the measure vertically and it's in military. So a 1 on top of a 1 is 11am. The "sky' rows should be as dark blue to black as possible for beat observing. If there aren't boxes it means it's daytime more or less. color is opaque bright cloudy etc and for simplicities sake just BAD. The "fasten" rows are mostly for your comfort but apparently can also cause your telescope in the way of moisture. The sky looks best at 4 a m on Thursday I think... Unfortunately West Chester is red on the. The Ohio and a few Kentucky can be seen here. Caesar Creek is the only other place nearby and it has "orange" light pollution: There aren't any good options where I'm at. change surface Caesar Creek is faaar away. This is a 178mi x 230mi map of light polluiton centered on West Chester: Compare that to say Crater Lake National Park in Oregon: And a map of lighten pollution centered on Crater Lake:
