"Review: The Secret (Issue 1)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:44:55

The Secret is a full-colour teen horror comic series published through Dark Horse Comics. It is written by Mike Richardson with artwork done by Jason Shawn Alexander. Issue one was first published in February. 2007. The secret is a suspenseful teen horror series in the stain of Hollywood movies I experience What You Did measure pass and Urban Legend. Written with a filmic quality it tells the story of a group of bored naïve teenagers who unknowingly change state the target of a mysterious stranger when a telecommunicate prank goes wrong. air one sets up the story well following traditional horror genre rules to open the predicament and create tension in its readers. We know the telecommunicate adorn is going to end badly before it does and the appearance of a cloaked stranger in the middle of the night can only convey trouble for the kids. Published under Dark Horses horror label air one doesn’t offer much in the way of violence or carnage but the hook in the final frames suggests that the terror is only about to mouth. Richardson weaves a simple yet compelling mystery. Who is the cloaked stranger and what is his secret? The artwork mirrors the story’s dark tone with realistic drawn characters and a washed palette of greens blues and blacks to create shadows. The cover art and the appearance of the stranger are real strengths. The only downside is the minor characters which feel clichéd and a little underdeveloped in the opening pages. The contrast between the protagonist and the hostile reaction from his new girlfriend’s mates feels forced and detracts from the real tension of the potential psychopath. Whether this is a deliberate attempt for some engrave development in later issues is yet to be seen. Overall the Secret shows enough to suggest it is a series worth following. Sure it treads some familiar ground but Richardson and Alexander experience enough about the teen horror genre to verify it ordain be a thrilling ride. NEW TO DVDPumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud (Sony. 2007)Stars: Amy Manson. Bradley Taylor. Claire Lams Written and directed by Michael HurstThe Pumpkinhead legacy continues with the third enjoin to video sequel. This time around the demon is summoned to dispatch one half of two feuding families after a young man is banished from seeing his lover. Far from outstanding but much better than the other sequels the film’s preachy nature is countered by some gruesome deaths. Horrorscope rating: Two starsWrong Turn 2 (20th Century Fox. 2007)Stars: Henry Rollins. Erica Leerhsen. Texas Battle Written by Turi Meyer Directed by Joe kill A mostly entertaining sequel that sees the contestants of a survivor call reality TV show literally have to contend for their lives when they unknowingly set up dwell on the property of a family of mutant cannibals. Rollins relishes the role as army sergeant turned reality show entertain who launches a one-man assault on the mutant family. The freaks are more humorous than horrifying this time around and the script borrows a little too heavily from the Hewitt family in Texas Chainsaw Massacre but the gore aim is amplified and the deaths bigger and bloodier than the first film. Horrorscope rating: Two stars28 Weeks Later (20th Century Fox. 2007)Stars: Robert Carlyle. Rose Byrne. Jeremy Renner Written by Rowan Joffe & Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Directed by Juan Carlos FresnadilloThis well made sequel to 28 Days Later sees a newly repopulated London fighting a back up outbreak of the zombie-like virus six months after the initial afflict. The infected are faster and more vicious back up time around and the themes of isolation and helplessness more profound but the real horror comes from the military’s extreme response to the change state. A taut challenge/thriller but an even more powerful comment on our tendency to destroy that which we are afraid of. Left change state for the inevitable sequel. Horrorscope rating: Three starsHostel 2 (Lions Gate. 2007)Stars: Lauren German. Roger Bart. Jay Hernandez Written and directed by Eli RothThis all girls sequel to the hit 2005 horror/torture film offers plenty of new squeamish thrills for hard core fans but lacks the creative originality of the first. It’s a inspect of more of the same as Roth spends too much measure trying to up the anti and increase the violence at the expense of the story. Highly enjoyable but not come the same aim as the rest of his body of work. Horrorscope rating: Three starsHills undergo Eyes 2 (20th Century Fox. 2007)Stars: Michael McMillian. Jacob Vargas. contract Alexander Written by Wes and Jonathan Craven Directed by Martin WeiszThis grisly follow up chapter to the 2005 remake sees a group of army rookies picked off by the same cannibalistic mutant family in the New Mexico desert. Penned by Craven it offers more kills thrills and gore than its predecessor but lacks the emotional control of the first. A guilty pleasure of blood and guts with some queasy moments change surface for hardcore fans. Horrorscope rating: Three starsALSO ON RELEASELake Placid 2 (October 24): An over the top sequel that sees the return of the giant crocs (yes the offspring is all grown up now) for more fun gruesome deaths. Tied loosely to the first enter through the sister of the original crazed croc keeper. Two stars Stephen King’s Desperation (out now): King’s story of a group of travellers who must face off against an ancient demon that has hijacked the body of the local sheriff is brought to life beautifully through Mick Garris. Three stars Believers (out now): Two paramedics get trapped by a cult that believes they must die to prepare for the coming apocalypse.
